History

The Polish Society of Modern Languages ​​was established in 1929 in Warsaw during a convention of teachers of modern languages. It was the first, spontaneously founded association resulting from the need to exchange experiences and create a discussion forum on topics related to teaching foreign languages. The pre-war PTN operated in 5 districts (Warsaw, Poznań, Krakow, Lviv, Vilnius) and 6 branches (Łódź, Lublin, Silesia, Kalisz, Tarnopol, Lida). Representatives of the Society were active in the country and internationally, participating in international congresses. PTN was also a founding member of FIPLV.

After the war, until 1969, there was no foreign language teachers’ association. The Polish Society of Modern Philology was reactivated as a result of the efforts of prof. Ludwik Zabrocki at the University of Poznań. Since then, the Society’s headquarters is located in Poznań. International cooperation has also been resumed: membership in FIPLV has been renewed, and members of the Society have joined the projects implemented by the federation and perform important functions in its structures. In 2006, a new FIPLV-EUROPE structure was established, which included all European FIPLV regions. On March 28, the University of Leipzig decided to establish WCER: FIPLV Western/Central European Region under the auspices of FIPLV-Europe. The region included the founding countries: Great Britain, France, Germany and Poland. The transformation of the Western and Central regions into one is the result of the consolidation of the forces of active organizations operating within the FIPLV. Each member has the right to one representative in the WCER authorities – the Assembly of Regions, in the current term the presidents of multilingual organizations in the countries belonging to FIPLV-WCER have become representatives. The chairman of the Management Board was prof. Dr. hab. Konrad Schroeder from the University of Augsburg (also president of FIPLV-Europe). The president of the PTN, prof., was elected Secretary General. Ph.D. Halina Widła.
